King Robert of Sicily, was a significant figure in Italian politics during the 14th century. Upon his father's death in 1309, Robert became the king of Naples. His reign was marked by a period of relative stability compared to his father and grandfather's reigns, but it was also characterized by conflicts with Germanic powers in northern Italy and the House of Barcelona in the western Mediterranean. Longfellow poem is a fictionalised narrative that captures the essence of the king's pride and the divine intervention that ultimately leads to his downfall. The story is a blend of historical events and fantastical elements, creating a tale that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. A sumptuously illustrated edition. Grey, Jane Willis (illustrator).
