Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Takes a collaborative approach to prioritize the voices of indigenous artists of Chicagoland Zhegagoynak, also called Chicagoland, has long been an Indigenous cultural and economic hub. It is the traditional homeland of the Council of Three Fires--the Ojibwe, Potawatomi, and Odawa--as well as the Menominee, Miami, Ho-Chunk, Sac, Fox, Kickapoo, and Illinois nations. Today, Chicago has the third largest urban Indian population in the United States. Indigenous voices, however, are often absent from stories of Chicagoland. This silence is damaging. Woven Being begins with the question, What if Indigenous people with ties to the region were the point of entry for thinking about this land?Guided by Indigenous collaborations, priorities, and voices, this work explores expansive themes, resisting the monolithic storytelling that often characterizes presentations shaped by settler-colonial perspectives and practices. The book is developed in collaboration with four artists who have connections to Zhegagoynak--Andrea Carlson (Grand Portage Ojibwe), Kelly Church (Match-E-Be-Nash-E-Wish Band of Pottawatomi), Nora Moore Lloyd (Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Ojibwe), and Jason Wesaw (Pokagon Band of Potawatomi). Authors with deep ties to the artists introduce and expand on the artists' contributions from their own disciplinary and personal vantage points. Excerpts of poetry, prose, and images, chosen in dialogue with the artists, further expand the narrative. An addendum highlights the frequently underrecognized work of Chicago-based Indigenous artists and institutions.Woven Being offers a new look at art in Chicagoland and its relationship with Indigenous arts across Turtle Island (North America). Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. An important examination of how artists have grappled with anti-Black violence and its representations from the late nineteenth century to the presentFrom the horrors of slavery and lynching to the violent suppression of civil rights struggles and recent acts of police brutality, targeted violence of Black lives has been an ever-present fact in American history. Images of African American suffering and death have constituted an enduring part of the nation's cultural landscape, and the development of creative counterpoints to these images has been an ongoing concern for American artists. Investigating the conceptual and aesthetic strategies artists have used to engage with the issue of anti-Black violence, A Site of Struggle highlights diverse works of art and ephemera from the post-Reconstruction period of the late nineteenth century to the founding of the Black Lives Matter movement.Foregrounding the perspectives of African American cultural producers, this book examines three major questions: How are graphic portrayals of violence enlisted to protest horrors like lynchings? How have artists employed conceptual strategies and varying degrees of abstraction to avoid literal representations of violence? And how do artists explore violence through subtler engagements with the Black body? Ultimately, A Site of Struggle highlights the ubiquity and impact of anti-Black violence by focusing on its depictions; by examining how art has been used to protest, process, mourn, and memorialize this violence; and by providing the historical context for contemporary debates about its representation. The book's essays offer new perspectives from established and emerging scholars working in the fields of African American studies, art history, communications, and history.Contributors include Sampada Aranke, Courtney Baker, Huey Copeland, Janet Dees, Leslie Harris, and LaCharles Ward.Published in association with the Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern UniversityExhibition ScheduleThe Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, Northwestern UniversityJanuary 26July 10, 2022Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts, Montgomery, AlabamaAugust 13November 6, 2022 Examines the vast array of art produced by African Americans in response to the continuing impact of anti-Black violence and how it is used to protest, process, mourn and memorialize those events.
