Covers a variety of subjects including algebra, theory of gunnery, and astronomy. Mansfield was an early American educator and mathematician. This book brought him to the attention of President Thomas Jefferson, who appointed Mansfield captain of Engineers so he could teach as a professor at the West Point military academy. With 14 folding diagrams, logarithms and other tables. There is no date on the title page, but an early owner has penciled in "1801." Mansfield's name is not on the title page, but is on the Preface. He was Surveyor General under Jefferson, and Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy at West Point. A good copy, with some toning to the logarithm tables, and a few spots of light foxing here and there. In leather boards, rubbed and stained, with red leather spine label.
