The book itself is much better preserved than the jacket. A concise historical study of the development of education in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka), tracing the evolution of indigenous systems of learning and the transformation brought by Portuguese, Dutch and British colonial rule. Particular attention is given to missionary schools, the introduction of Western curricula, and the emergence of modern state education in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The work also discusses Buddhist revival movements, vernacular education, and the role of education in the formation of modern Ceylonese national identity. Useful for historians of colonial education, South Asian studies, and comparative educational history. The study originated as university research at Peradeniya and was later issued by the Department of Cultural Affairs, making the printed edition an early official publication of the work. Includes bibliographical references and a useful survey of early sources for the study of education in Sri Lanka. Academic works from the Ceylon Department of Cultural Affairs of this period were produced in relatively small print runs and are now increasingly difficult to obtain. A scarce scholarly publication from the Cultural Affairs Department, not commonly encountered in the trade. Condition summary Book: excellent Dust jacket: torn and scuffed but present.
