Frontispice ajouté hors-texte gravé en taille-douce, (4) ff., 648 pp., (10) ff. Rousseurs uniformes. Edition originale de la traduction française de Jean Berault. Euphormion ou le Satyricon est un roman allégorique et satirique dirigé contre les jésuites avec lesquels l'auteur avait eu maille à partir. Il raconte les tribulations d'un jeune homme dans la société de l'époque : tous les éléments de la vie sociale de la Renaissance y sont abordés : éducation, justice, religion, politique, vie de cour et prostitution, sorcellerie, arts, médecine. "Selon Victor Fournel (La Littérature indépendante et les écrivains oubliés), "à travers une succession de péripéties, le merveilleux apparaît sans cesse ; Apulée, que Barclay avait relu bien des fois, a prêté un reflet e son réalisme fantastique. L'allégorie, trop souvent obscure, domine surtout dans la seconde partie, où l'on voit percer les allusions contemporaines à travers le voile d'une mythologie d'emprunt". Euphormion avait paru en latin à Londres en 1603. Une première traduction partielle avait été donnée par M. Nau, avocat au parlement de Paris en 1626 sous le titre L'Oeil clairvoyant d'Euphormion dans les actions des hommes. On a ajouté à cet exemplaire le frontispice de cette première traduction. La traduction de Bérault, est selon Dukas "écrite d'un style sobre et correct et elle se laisse lire ; on peut seulement lui reprocher d'être quelquefois trop libre". Cet exemplaire comporte une clef imprimée sur deux feuillets qui n'est pas signalée par Tchémerzine ni par Arbour, ui ne figure que dans quelques exemplaires. Selon Dukas, cette clef n'a pas été produite par Bérault mais par un tiers resté anonyme.
