C'est en historien que Jean Sagnes aborde cette question à propos d'un pays languedocien représentatif d'une naturelle adéquation aux espoirs du mouvement ouvrier : le département de l'Hérault. Son livre retrace la vie et l'action des milieux socialistes et syndicalistes durant trois décennies allant de la fondation des Bourses du travail à la naissance du parti communiste. L'Hérault se trouve alors au tout premier rang de la gauche française par le nombre des Bourses du travail, l'ampleur des grèves agricoles, les effectifs du parti socialiste. Il représente également la terre d'élection d'une expérience unique, la coopération socialiste viticole symbolisée par le nom de Maraussan. Nous voyons ainsi se refléter dans le miroir d'une économie et d'une société proprement méridionale le destin de l'ensemble du monde ouvrier français. Depuis le Parti ouvrier, constitué à la fin du XIXe siècle, jusqu'à la scission de Tours, se manifestent en effet dans l'Hérault, à la fois les aspirations propres aux viticulteurs et ouvriers de cette région et l'évolution de la gauche française. Rarement l'histoire d'une "province" s'est montrée aussi expressive de sa propre personnalité tout en portant témoignage d'un combat qui a marqué le passé et le présent de tout le socialisme français. 16x24 cm. 320 p.
