Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Photographs by S. W. Corse (illustrator). 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, 1903 on the Title Page). There is a small label off the bottom edge of the front inside cover on which is printed 'Library Of Curtis S. Emery.' Also off the bottom edge another small label with two printed words 'Case' (which would reference bookcase) and 'Shelf'. The number 2 was penciled beside each. Apparently Mr. Emery had his own library. Here's a little bit of information on the previous owner of this book: 'Emery, Curtis Stanton (b. 1861)-- also known as Curtis S. Emery-- of Chelsea, Orange County, Vt.; Newport, Orleans County, Vt. Born in Brookfield, Orange County, Vt., November 6, 1861. Republican. Lawyer; banker; Orange County Commissioner, 1885-88; member of Vermont state house of representatives from Chelsea, 1888; U.S. Collector of Customs, 1909.' He ran in the Republican primary for governor in 1920. As you can see from the photos, the covers have held up pretty nicely. The gilt lettering on the front and spine is very bright. There is only light wear at the corners and spine ends. The six edges are in good shape with just a few shallow dents. There is some spotting on the rear cover. There is a crease off the top corner of the front cover. However, it did not have any impact on the pages inside the book. These pages don't have any creasing. The book is pretty square and pretty solidly bound. There is a very thin space between the front inside cover and the first front end paper, mostly visible when you look at it from the side, in case you're doing some neck exercises. There are no spaces or cracks between the rear inside cover and rear end paper. The pages all seem to be quite solidly bound. I'm not seeing any spaces between any of them. These pages are exceptionally clean. They are glossy, but there is no foxing at all anywhere in the book. I'm looking over these pages now and I'm not seeing any soiling. There are a great many photographs. They all appear to be in excellent shape. The frontispiece is a photograph of Theodore Roosevelt taken in 1902. It is in excellent shape. It is protected by a tissue guard which is also in very good shape, with just a tiny crease at one of its top corners. I was just turning over the pages to see if I might have missed something and I did find a tiny tear off the outer edge of one of the pages, and on its verso a very, very slight discoloration. It's kind of funny because there is a photograph of Curtis S. Emery on the facing page. I hadn't thought to look through the photographs to see if he was included. So now I'm guessing that one of his fingers was resting on the verso page as he looked and looked at his own photo which created this very mild discoloration as well as the tiny tear off its edge. Pretty funny. I didn't find any other tears on any of the other pages. Nor are there any markings. Mr. Emery did attach (just at its edge) a small newspaper clipping announcing the death of a W. H. Vincent from Orwell. It's on the page with Dr. Vincent's photograph. Most of these pages have four photographs. There are no other attachments to be found anywhere in the book. There's also a 7 by 4" loose card announcing the death of a George Edmund Royce in 1903 from Rutland County. He was a Democrat. I guess that was in the day when Democrats and Republicans were friendly. This card was next to the page with Mr. Royce's photograph. Across from the photographs there are descriptions of the individuals photographed. The one for Curtis Stanton Emery repeats some of the information I gave above. It says that he was also a member of the House in 1898 and 1900, and that, among other things, he served as colonel on the staff of Governor Smith. Back to condition, I failed to mention that there is no writing of any kind to be found anywhere in the book. And that covers everything.
