Minor edge and corner wear to the dj; lightly scuffed and scratched; corners are lightly bumped and rubbed; some light shelf wear; ex-library with the usual library markings; overall a nice used copy! Black boards quarterbound by orange with silver lettering on the spine. 388 informative and educational pages! "Although Pedro Calderón de la Barca was one of the greatest and most prolific playwrights of Spain's Golden Age, most of his nonallegorical comedias?118 in all - have remained unknown. Robert ter Horst presents here the first full-length study of these works, a sustained, meditative analysis dealing with more than 80 plays, conveying a sense of the whole of Calderón's secular theater. To approach so vast a body of literature, Mr. ter Horst examines the meaning and function in Calderón of three broad subjects - myth, honor, and history - the warp threads across which the playwright weaves a subtle tapestry of contrasts, dualities, and conflicts: the private person versus the public person, the inner realm versus the outer, masculine against feminine, poet against prince. The Calderón who emerges is a consciously consummate artist whose lifelong study was the passions of the human mind and body. In addition, he is seen as a synthesizer of his Spanish literary heritage and especially as a brilliant adapter of Cervantes' insights to the stage. Robert ter Horst's profound and far-ranging analysis sheds light on many fine works previously neglected and finds new depths in such supreme achievements as No hay cosa como callar, El segundo Escipión, and La vida es suefio.".

Hardback. Condition: Near Fine. Schumann (2001) by Eric Frederick Jensen is the sort of book that arrives with the quiet confidence of a man in a frock coat who has no need whatsoever to raise his voice. It is not here to offer ?ten fun facts? about Robert Schumann, nor to reduce one of the 19th century?s more fascinatingly complicated composers to a few convenient adjectives like ?romantic?, ?troubled?, or ?sensitive genius?, as though that settled the matter. No, this is Oxford University Press, which means things are about to become properly substantial. Schumann himself is, of course, one of those figures who encourages a certain amount of cultural swooning. A composer, critic, pianist manqué, husband of Clara, inventor of imaginary alter egos, and patron saint of people who feel that music ought to contain at least some longing, instability, inwardness, and beautifully managed emotional weather. He is one of those artists whose life seems almost too perfectly arranged for biography: gifted, intense, literary, ambitious, brilliant, and shadowed by decline. In lesser hands this could all become unbearably melodramatic. Fortunately, Eric Frederick Jensen appears to be interested in the far more rewarding business of understanding Schumann rather than merely embalming him in reverence. This is exactly the kind of book for readers who like their musical lives explained in full, with context, evidence, nuance, and enough detail to remind you that composers do not simply appear out of the mist trailing piano pieces behind them. They have careers, influences, arguments, ambitions, disappointments, social worlds, aesthetic programmes, professional gambles, and occasionally terrible timing. The result is a portrait not of a vague Romantic icon gazing soulfully into middle distance, but of a real cultural actor moving through a very particular world of performance, criticism, publishing, taste, and German intellectual seriousness. And what a world it is. The 19th century did love a composer, but it also loved a theory, an argument, a manifesto, and a nervous collapse. Schumann fits the era rather alarmingly well. He is forever turning up at the crossroads of music and literature, public reputation and private turmoil, artistic innovation and personal fragility. Which means a proper study of him has to do several things at once: talk about the music, certainly, but also the myth, the reception, the people around him, and the extent to which later generations have been unable to resist tidying him into a legend. This book, gloriously, sounds like it knows better. There is also something very pleasing about a composer biography from Oxford University Press. It suggests seriousness without pomposity, scholarship without gimmickry, and a total refusal to apologise for expecting the reader to meet the subject halfway. This is not a glossy ?life and works? trifle for someone who vaguely enjoyed Kinderszenen once in a candlelit advert. This is for people who want Schumann in full scale: the mind, the music, the context, the contradictions. Condition: Near Fine, which feels suitably elegant for a book on a composer whose name still carries a certain cultivated glow. It sounds as though it has spent its life on the shelf of a thoughtful person who intended to become even more informed than they already were. A handsome find for music lovers, biographical omnivores, students of Romanticism, piano obsessives, and anyone drawn to that irresistible 19th-century combination of genius, criticism, idealism, and beautifully organised emotional turbulence. In short: Schumann, explained at adult length.
