A una de ellas, Blesila, la exhorta a la vida monástica con la lectura comentada del Eclesiastés. Ella le pide que le ponga por escrito esas explicaciones. El t…rabajo se interrumpe a causa de la muerte repentina de la joven. Más tarde, instalado en Belén, Jerónimo completa aquellas anotaciones en forma de comentario sistemático. Por encima del valor de su versión, a partir del hebreo, sin abandonar los códices griegos, está el valor del comentario, pues supuso un gran avance en la interpretación histórico-literal de un libro sagrado de difícil lectura. Con mucha frecuencia Jerónimo acude a la ciencia filológica para desentrañar el sentido literal de las palabras del hagiógrafo. No abandona en ningún momento su finalidad parenética, y es fiel al tono polémico propio de la época patrística y de la retórica romana. Sin duda, para aquellos tiempos se trató de un comentario moderno, que influyó durante siglos y que todo exegeta moderno y lector asiduo de la Biblia debe apreciar.
