From U.S. Route 1 to the 1922 completion of the Pulaski Skyway and the advent of the three-lane highway, the Holland Tunnel (1927),the opening of the George Washington Bridge in 1932 (double decked beginning in 1958), the Lincoln Tunnel (1934) the creation of the New Jersey Turnpike authority in 1948, and beyond.
