Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. On December 29, 1918, the Spartakus League, a Marxist revolutionary movement, rose up in Germany calling for an end to class rule by the bourgeoisie. Massive demonstrations followed and more than 500,000 Berliners took to the streets in January-only to be crushed by police and anticommunist paramilitary troops. Several leaders of the League were killed and the revolt was quashed. Through a detailed reconstruction of the events of that bloody winter, historian and critic Furio Jesi recasts our understanding of a foundational political difference-revolt or revolution? Drawing on a deep reserve of literary sources like Brecht, Eliade, Dostoyevsky, and Mann, Jesi outlines a uniquely incisive phenomenology of revolt that distinguishes between the purposeful historical temporality of revolution and the suspension of time that marks a revolt. And with the addition of an essay on the politics of time and revolution by Rosa Luxemburg, a founding leader of the Spartakus League, this volume becomes a crucial text at the intersection of history and philosophy. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Powerful insight into some of the deeper determinants of Western political rationality and its stigmatizing, inferiorizing, and racializing dynamics. The Blood Libel, written in 1973 by the Italian scholar of myth and radical critic Furio Jesi, explores the archival traces of the 1840 Damascus affair, an anti-Semitic accusation of ritual murder. We follow in detail how the death of a Catholic missionary monk in Ottoman Syria is transformed into a racist myth that depends on the figure of the savagemore precisely, on the paranoid projection of the Jew as a masked inner enemy, who, as Jesi writes, has hypocritically and externally civilized himselfand who has thus been able to continue to satisfy his blood-thirsty instincts within the very fabric of 'civilized' societies. This study is contrasted by a profound analysis of modernitys fears articulated in the figure of the vampire that circulated through Germanys nineteenth century. Written amidst the criminalization campaigns by the Italian state against anarchists and other inner enemies, The Blood Libel deploys Jesis conception of the mythological machine to anatomize the multiple entanglements of myth with the politics of exclusion and domination. A heterodox and uniquely incisive model of ideology critique, Jesis work offers us a powerful insight into some of the deeper determinants of Western political rationality and its stigmatizing, inferiorizing, and racializing dynamics. Hardback. Condition: New. One of the foremost thinkers of his generation, Furio Jesi began to publish scholarly essays in academic journals at the age of fifteen. By the time of his early death in 1980, he had accumulated a body of work that astonishes with its abundance and diversity, its depth and scope, and, above all, for its unfailing rigor and brilliance. In Time and Festivity, Andrea Cavalletti collects Jesi's finest essays, ranging from his groundbreaking work on myth and politics to his reflections on time, festivity, and revolt. He explores the significance of texts by Rimbaud, Rilke, Lukács, and Pavese and the mythological language of the biblical story of Susanna. Carefully annotated and referenced, and enriched by a first-person account of Jesi's intellectual biography, Time and Festivity provides a precious guide to the methodology and approach at the core of Jesi's thought, displaying how his personal, vitally intense via negativa might in fact originate from his early statement: "All I have ever written is poetry.".…

Paperback. Condition: New. An analysis of how a political myth is taken and treated as a metaphor that reflects how a country like Germany built its own destiny. In the decades before the rise of the Third Reich, "Secret Germany" was a phrase used by the circle of writers around the poet Stefan George to describe a collective political and poetic project: the introduction of the highest values of art into everyday life, the secularization of myth and the mythologization of history. In this book, Furio Jesi takes up the term in order to trace the contours of that political, artistic, and aesthetic thread as it runs through German literary and artistic culture in the period-which, in the 1930s, became absorbed by Nazism as part of its prophecy of a triumphant future. Drawing on thinkers like Carl Jung and writers such as Thomas Mann and Rainer Maria Rilke, Jesi reveals a literary genre that was transformed, tragically, into a potent political myth.…
