Er hatte, damals noch Statthalter von Gallien seine erste Gemahlin verloren und trachtete bei der Wahl einer zweiten vor allem danach, sich mit einer Günstlingin des Glücks zu verbinden. Sobald er daher gehört hatte, in Emesa in Syrien lebe eine junge Dame, die die Nativität einer Königin habe, so bewarb er sich um ihre Hand und erhielt sie. Julia Domna dies war ihr Name verdiente alles, was ihr die Sterne verheißen konnten. Sie erhielt ihre Schönheit bis in ein spätes Alter und verband mit lebhafter Phantasie solche Seelenstärke und Beurteilungskraft, wie man sie selten bei ihrem Geschlechte findet. Ihr liebenswürdiges Gemüt scheint indessen nie besonderen Eindruck auf ihren finsteren, mißtrauischen Gemahl gemacht zu haben. Auf dem Kaiserthron fand die hohe Frau nicht das Glück, das sie sich versprochen hatte. Sie suchte daher Trost in den Wissenschaften besonders in der Geometrie. Zu dem Hofstaat von Gelehrten, mit welchen sie sich umgab, gehörte.auch der Grieche Philostratus, ein Angehöriger der bekannten Sophistenfamilie dieses Namens. Eines Tages wurden der Kaiserin Schriftstücke, angeblich von einem Mann aus Ninive Namens Damis herrührend, übergeben. Sie enthielten Berichte über das Leben eines bis dahin verhältnismäßig wenig bekannten Mannes aus dem ersten Jahrhundert n. Chr., des Apollonius von Tyana aus Kappadocien. Die Kaiserin, so berichtet Philostratus, übergab nun diese Papiere, die durch Vermittlung eines Verwandten des Damis an sie gelangt waren, ihm dem Sophisten, um sie umzuschreiben und in besseres Griechisch zu übertragen, denn der Mann aus Ninive hatte sich zwar deutlich, aber nicht gebildet genug ausgedrückt. Diese Papiere nun, verbunden mit anderweitigen Nachrichten, versichert uns Philostratus, seien die Quelle seiner uns vorliegenden Biographie des Apollonius von Tyana. Man hat diese Angabe lebhaft bestritten und sie geradezu als eine verlogene Erfindung des Sophisten bezeichnet, der damit für seinen Tendenzroman sich den Schein der Glaubwürdigkeit geben wollte. Allein abgesehen davon, daß Philostratus, am Hofe des Caracalla lebend, es kaum wagen durfte, die zur Zeit der Herausgabe seines Werkes schon verstorbene Kaiserin in seinen literarischen Betrug hineinzuziehen, so hat auch andererseits seine Angabe hohe Wahrscheinlichkeit.
