Hardcover. thick sm4to, 24.3cm, volume one, rebound in full green linen, gilt spine titles, complete with haf title. (Qc) cf: T.P.L. 71. Gagnon 1-2971. Field 1277. A reprint of all of the Jesuit Relations, including those of 1611 and 1626, as well as the annual relations published by Cramoisy between 1632 and 1672. The Jesuit Relations are the single most important source of information about the Indians of North America in the 17th Century. In many cases they are the only source. The originals are so rare that even with unlimited resources it would be unlikely to build a complete set. This is the first collected edition of these invaluable works, and was commissioned by the Dominion Government after the set in the Quebec Legislative Library was destroyed by the great fire in 1854. Gagnon reports that 1300 sets were ordered printed.

First Thwaites Edition, Limited to 750 sets. This set bears rubberstamps "Unnumbered set, bound from waste sheets, for editorial use." "A monumental editorial achievement. Contains all reports, official and unofficial, made by members of this missionary order, on their activities in North America from 1601 to 1791. In all, 238 pieces are given in their original French, Latin and Italian texts, with English translations." (Howes) Spanning the years 1632 to 1673 the relations were the regular reports sent back by the priests of the Canadian mission to their superiors in France. Not only do they record the progress of the missions in converting the Canadian aboriginals to Christianity, they are also an important source of historical information on the exploration of New France, the manners and customs of the natives, and the daily life of the French settlers. Thwaites was assisted in the compilation of the Relations by an impressive array of European and American scholars. In the introduction to his volume of Errata and Addenda, which was published in 1967, Joseph P.Donnelly highlighted some of the significant aspects of the work: "The identification of persons, even very obscure individuals, is an extremely valuable editorial contribution. The bibliographical information regarding the heuristics and provenance of material included in the series is of inestimable worth to the historianAn outstanding editorial featureis the exhaustive two-volume index". This set belonged to Dr. Lorris Elijah Borden [1877-1963], a long-standing associate of the Arctic Institute. Borden was the last surviving member of the 1903-04 Canadian Arctic Expedition in the Neptune under Captain A.P.Low, in which he took part as medical officer. This expedition constituted the first significant step towards the assertion of Canadian authority in the eastern Arctic. During that time Borden studied the diseases afflicting the Inuit and gathered a collection of carvings and other artifacts that was gifted, together with his notes and diaries, to the Public Archives of Canada in 1964 by his widow. The artifacts are now housed in the Canadian Museum of Civilization. TPL 630. Howes J-106.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 8vo, pp. [8], 316. Italic letter; large printer's device on title, floriated initials; small traces of glue at foot of first three leaves, tiny marginal stain to outer upper corner of f. 27. A fine, wide-margined copy in late sixteenth-century limp vellum; yapp edges, early title inked on spine and later gilt on morocco label, pasted stubs from a dictionary or glossary. First Italian edition of an epistolary account of the Jesuit missions from all over the early modern world, translated from Spanish. It concerns in particular the vast maritime domain of the Portuguese Empire, consisting of numerous strategical harbours on the coasts of Africa, South Asia and South America. This network was instrumental in controlling the trade of spices and precious metals, but offered also safe starting points for Catholic evangelisation. This collection of letters narrates travels to and fro and daily missionary life in Brazil, India, China, Japan and Ethiopia, providing details of the Jesuit activities, including mass conversions, as well as relevant information on local people, flora and fauna. Often, missives are sent to or from the St Paul's College of Goa, which was established about 1542 by Francis Xavier as the educational and cultural centre of the Jesuit expansion in the East, and housed the first printing press in India from 1556. These letters were highly sought after in secular Europe, often providing the only reliable information available on the political, economic, commercial and social conditions of large and increasingly important part of the globe.
