La loi d'exil de 1886 avait à nouveau contraint à l'exil le comte de Paris (1838-1894) et son fils Philippe duc d'Orléans (1869-1926) et interdisait la carrière militaire à tous les princes français. Prétendant au trône de France à la mort de son père en 1894, condamné à l'exil et héritant de l'immense fortune des Orléans, il continuera ses voyages d'exploration et de chasse à travers le monde. L'ouvrage de Joantho est ici la chronique touristique et mondaine de la croisière en méditerranée que fit le duc d'Orléans en compagnie de sa jeune épouse, l'archiduchesse Marie-Dorothée de Habsbourg-Lorraine, sur le Yatch privé du duc, "La Maroussia".
