Atrapada en las innovaciones del positivismo, "Recordaciones Históricas" es la primera gran obra de historia general de la entidad, historia en la que Baranda trató de recoger todos aquellos rasgos que, según él, definían a Campeche como región, como sociedad y como estado libre y soberano. Además de lo relativo a Campeche, Joaquín Baranda provee sustanciales notas sobre la historia general del país. Joaquín Baranda y Quijano (1840 - 1909), político, escritor, historiador y maestro mexicano. Creador de la Procuraduría General de la República y de la Normal de Profesores, también diputado del Congreso de la Unión, presidente del Supremo Tribunal de Justicia, Gobernador de Campeche de 1871 a 1877 y Secretario de Justicia e Instrucción Pública en el gobierno de Porfirio Díaz. La obra, que fue publicada con seis años de separación entre sus tomos, es particularmente rara cuando se encuentra completa. El segundo tomo lo terminó y editó su hijo, Perfecto Baranda MacGregor.
