Johan Börjesson, född 30 augusti 1790 i Tanums socken i Bohuslän, död 6 maj 1866, var en svensk präst och dramatiker samt ledamot av Svenska Akademien 1859-1866 (stol 3). - - - "En annan akademiledamot, hovpredikanten Johan Börjesson (1790-1866), 'den siste fosforisten', skrev sitt sorgespel Erik XIV 1843. Börjessons livsöde som dramatiker är säreget: fram till 50-årsåldern hindrades hans konstnärsdrift av bundenheten till det ensamma prästyrket. När manuskriptet till Erik XIV väl var färdigt, hade det en lång väg till scenen (bl. a. tillbringade det ett år på en hylla i Emilie Högqvists garderob!), men dramat sattes slutligen upp på Kungliga teatern 1846. Georg Nordensvan har skildrat mottagandet. Pjäsen vann 'avgjord och stor framgång' men tycks ändå ha mött mycket olika reaktioner i samtiden: Geijer talade om dess 'friskhet, kraft och ursprunglighet', Nils Arfwidsson menade det vara skrivet med 'inspiration och divination', J. V. Snellman fann det vara 'ett fulländat mästerstycke' - medan den gamle Carl Gustaf von Brinkman om 'denna vämjeliga smörja', detta 'poetiska missfoster', utbrast: 'Jag tror aldrig någon rimmande slyngel har så förargat mig som denne.' (Slyngeln var vid denna tid en 56-årig prost.) Nordensvans egen bedömning är positiv: 'ett starkt, temperamentsfullt, originellt diktverk, överskådligt och klart komponerat, följdriktigt genomfört med dramatisk fart i en rad verkningsfulla scener, burna aven flödande yppig lyrik i konstfullt lagda verser'. Erik XIV trycktes i flera upplagor och utkom två gånger i tysk översättning. Börjesson skrev senare ytterligare ett antal - mindre framgångsrika - pjäser med samma ämne" (Sven Bjerstedt).
