Leipzig, das er 1760 als Magister der Philosophie abschloß, und habilitierte sich im folgenden Jahr. Er hielt mathematische und philosophische Vorlesungen, begab sich 1764 auf eine Reise durch Deutschland und Frankreich, war 1768/69 als Hofmeister in St. Petersburg tätig und folgte 1770 einem Ruf als Prof. der Mathematik nach Wittenberg. In seinen zahlreichen mathematischen, philosophischen und naturwissenschaftlichen Abhandlungen (u.a. Unterweisungen in den Anfangsgründen der Naturlehre., 1775) versuchte E. das Wissen verständlich zu vermitteln und so für eine soziale Reformbewegung zu nutzen. 1784/85 gab er das Wochenblatt "Der Philosoph für Jedermann" heraus; er war Verfasser der satirischen Wochenblätter "Fidibus" (1768-70) und "Tapeten" (1771-76).
