Brain for the preservation, in a permanent form, of the following Lectures delivered by him, his family venture to publish them as a little memorial of the Lecturer, who passed away on the 12th April, 1901. The Lecture on the Legends and Ballads of Berkshire was delivered on the 20th February, 1890, and its preparation was suggested by some remarks of that distinguished historian, the late Dr. Stubbs, then Bishop of Oxford. In view of the publication of the Lecture, the various Ballads quoted have been verified by comparison with such authentic records as have been accessible, and pains have been taken to render the quotations as accurate as possible. The Lecture on Thomas Noon Talfourd was delivered on the 6th December, 1888, to the members of the Mutual Improvement Society in connexion with Broad Street Congregational Church, Reading, with which Church the subject of it had family associations through his fat.…
