Through a series of detailed experiments, the author provides a comprehensive guide to identifying and classifying various mineral ores, including gold, silver, copper, and iron. By exploring their physical properties, such as weight, color, and texture, the book unveils the secrets hidden within these natural resources. The author also examines the chemical reactions and interactions between minerals and various reagents, shedding light on their behavior under different conditions. This book serves as an invaluable resource for professionals in the field, aspiring geologists, and anyone interested in the science behind the extraction of valuable materials from the earth. Its insights into the nature of minerals and the techniques used to analyze them provide a deeper understanding of the processes that shape our planet and its resources. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. It details the tools and methodology used in this practice, which remains relevant even today as the basis for modern metallurgy. The author, an esteemed expert in the field, provides thorough descriptions of the diverse materials involved, from metals and semi-metals to salts, sulphurs, and minerals. These descriptions extend beyond mere observations to include the chemical properties and behaviors of each substance when subjected to heat or combined with other elements. The book delves into the complexities of how different substances interact, offering insights into the processes of melting, sublimation, and oxidation. Through these explanations, the author reveals the intricate relationships between the composition of ores and the resulting properties of the metals they yield. This book serves as a valuable resource for those seeking to gain a comprehensive understanding of the art of assaying, its historical significance, and its enduring practical applications. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. With 6 folding engraved plates of laboratory apparatus. Contemporary calf, rebacked; interior excellent. A beautiful copy. First edition in English, greatly enlarged from the first edition printed in Latin in 1739. One of the first of it's kind, this treatise contains the entire art of theoretical and practical assaying. The illustrations and descriptions of instruments and apparatus are considered exceptionally accurate. In addition, Cramer here first describes the use of the blowpipe in smelting small amounts of substances and in analyzing them. Of particular interest is the prefixed list of the chief English authors who have written on minerals and metals. The preface includes references to Agricola, Ercker and Stahl. Cramer (1710-77), according to Allgemeine Deutsche Biographie and to Partington, was the best assayer of his time, and is "justly reckoned among the best writers on the subject" (Baumer). He was appointed director of the Brunswick Mining and Metallurgy Administration in the Harz mountains. In 1738-39 he traveled throughout England in order to learn more about assaying, and gave lectures in London.
