Cheap Street was one of the greatest of the private presses, and this collection of chapbooks, all of them signed by each of the authors, comes housed in an elegant buckram bound traycase. Richard Cowper, Fritz Leiber, Pamela Sargent, John Sladek, Chelsea Quin YARBRO…, Roger Zelazny A splendid, unique, and singularly elegant production. Superlative and extremely rare collectable, and this seems to be the only copy available on Abe. All the original special envelopes are also included. Cheap Street Press was a small publishing company started up and operated by the husband-wife duo, George and Jan O'Nale, in their rural home near New Castle, Virginia. Cheap Street concentrated on publishing limited edition books, signed and numbered, of science fiction and fantasy works. Their books were renowned as excellent examples of the book-making arts, having been hand-printed letterpress by George on fine (often handmade) paper and hand-bound in fine cloth and leather with matching drop-back boxes. Their books were typically issued in editions of 50 to 200 copies, and sold for up to $250 each. They approached primarily only authors who they identified for excellence in writing quality. George and Jan O'Nale were hermitic in their habits, living in a fairly unpopulated area in the Virginian countryside. They were eccentric and irascible, and were known to suddenly and arbitrarily fall into contention with individuals with which they came in contact. In 2002, the O'Nales donated their collection of books and press materials to Tulane University, and then committed suicide in the spring of 2003, citing increasing health problems. Davies (1862-1928), American artist and organizer of the International Exhibition of Modern Art (the 1913 Armory show), knew the visionary American collector John Quinn in connection with Quinn's loans to the exhibition. Davies was also influential… as a patron of the arts. The "dispersal of Davies's art collection at public auction in April 1929 probably lent impetus to the establishment of the Museum of Modern Art in New York later that year" (ANB). Davies writes to Miss Thompson, "Quinn's favorite secretary," declining an invitation to attend the presentation of the Georges Seurat canvas Le Cirque to the French nation, which took place on 30 January 1925. The painting was the first gift by an American to the Louvre and is now held at the Musée d'Orsay. cf. Reid, The Man from New York, pp. 647-51.
