A letter to Colonel Lefroy discussing the commission of a gateway monument, having met with military contacts at the War Office with mention of the Commander in Chief, arranging a future meeting at the Great Exhibition of 1862. John Bell (1811-1895) was a British sculptor, born in Bell's Row, Great Yarmouth, Norfolk. His family home was Hopton Hall, Suffolk. His works were shown at the Great Exhibition of 1851, and he was responsible for the marble group representing "America" on the Albert Memorial in London. Size is 178mm x 114mm. Condition is good. Autograph letter, July 1868, to Doyne Bell, Permanent Secretary to the Privy Purse, music and art lover and Secretary to the committee which oversaw the completion of the Albert Memorial in London. John Bell mentions photos returned from Windsor [Castle] and work on his study of Cromwell. John Bell (1811-1895), who exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 and was most famous for the marble group representing America on the Albert Memorial in London. Bell's 1862 sculpture of Oliver Cromwell originally designed for the 1862 International Exhibition was erected in 1899 in Warrington, Cheshire. Size is 180mm x 115mm. Condition is good.
