Alan Maier joined the King's Royal Rifle Corps in August 1941 fresh from school, and was commissioned eight months later into the Rifle Brigade. He was severely wounded in North Africa, took part in the magnificent disaster at Tossignano, Italy, where he was captured, and spent the last five months of the war in a POW camp in Germany. John Bendit, Alan's cousin, who followed Alan into the Rifle Brigade a few months later, has edited these lively and affectionate letters home and provided an explanatory narrative which sets them in their historical context. Laid in is a letter from John Bendit related to the book. Ref KK 3.
