An exceptionally scarce early 19th century children"s primer, designed to instruct young readers through graduated lessons in monosyllables, pronunciation, and elocution. The work progresses from simple phonetic exercises and illustrated word lessons to short reading passages, while also incorporating guidance on reading aloud with references to classical orators including Demosthenes and Cicero. Two pages of publisher's advertisements to rear. In a contemporary quarter roan binding with marbled paper boards. Externally, worn. Front board fully detached, but present. Rubbing to boards with slight loss to paper. Front free endpaper, frontispiece, and title page fully detached, but present. Previous owner's ink inscription to front paste down erased, with lifting to paper. Rear joints cracked, rear board loose, fragile but holding. Spine largely perished with only a small portion remaining towards rear joint. Internally, gatherings from 3-95 very loose, retaining only the lowest sewing. Gatherings from p.96 onwards firmer, retaining sewing and potion of spine, hinges strained in places, but holding. Pages characteristically age toned with the odd light spot, heavier to first and last few leaves. Good Only. book.
