17 x 25cm 128pp good paperback, bottom right-hand corner has a minor curl. Signed by the author and dedicated to art critic, Tim Hilton, on the title page. Has a text by Jonathan Riley: John Bratby, a Personal Recollection followed by colour plus black and white reproductions showing the work of the English painter who founded the kitchen sink realism style of art that was influential in the late 1950s. He made portraits of his family and celebrities. His works were seen in television and film. Bratby was also a writer.

A title in the series Painters of Today.Presentation copy from the artist, inscribed by him in bold felt pen on the front free endpaper: "For Clare from John. 26th August '81''. The recipient is the biographer Claire Tomalin with whom Bratby seems not to have been so well acquainted as to know how to spell her name.Cover edges just a trifle rubbed. Very good indeed. No dustwrapper issued.

Semi-autobiographical novel by a leading artist of the kitchen sink school.Presentation copy from the author, inscribed in his usual flamboyant style on the front free endpaper: ''To Al Alvarez. 2 February 1983 with good wishes & regards from John Bratby''. The recipient is the legendary critic, essayist, poet, mountaineer, poker-player, etc, etc.Some faint spotting to fore-edge. Very good indeed in very good dustwrapper rubbed at the edges.

First edition, first impression, with illustrations by the author, signed by the author along with an original self portrait; 8vo; publisher's grey cloth, device to upper board in black with gilt border, titles to spine gilt on a black ground. With the Bratby-designed dust jacket. A lovely copy in the nicked and frayed dust jacket missing a few small pieces and with a slightly faded spine. Signed and dated (1960) by the author beneath a fabulous, full-page, pencil self portrait, on the front free endpaper. Bratby's style is nothing if not bold and the pencil drawing whilst far more naturalistic than his paintings retains all the energy of those more extensive works. This is the artist's first novel and though not expressly autobiographical it is certainly very much of his world and of its time. Just lovely.
