Brutus was born in Southern Rhodesia but lived in South African where he was jailed for his anti-apartheid activism and became a political refugee, moving to the United States in 1983. The pseudonym was used so the book could be distributed in South Africa, where his work is banned. It was re-issued in 1975 using he author's real name.
