The text block and illustrations are in near fine condition with no tears, marks, or dog-ears. No bookplate or name of a prior owner. Not a remainder or library book. The light green wraps are in good condition (crease in lower righthand corner, some discoloring along the edges, faded spine). 9 x 6, 232 pages, 14 ounces. XX [From the introduction] The Illinois River Valley has been recognized as an area of archeological interest for many years. The river has been a major avenue of travel since prehistoric times, the valley is fertile and offers abundant cover for wildlife, and it has, therefore, long attracted human population. Various early archeological surveys were made of this valley. Independent work, more collecting than excavation, was reported by Dr. Snyder to the Smithsonian Institution. Perhaps the most pretentious early report was that of Thomas, who in 1890-91 systematically located and described a large number of sites, mostly mounds, in the Midwest. More recently several reports have been concerned with the valley - the work of Moorehead and Taylor from 1922-28 and of Kelly in 1929 and 1930 for the University of Illinois. But it was the extensive and intensive work of the University of Chicago in Fulton County in 1930 and 1932, under the direction of Cole, that most stimulated interest and first focused student activity in this area. These studies were not concerned with Hopewell alone, but with earlier and later cultures in the area. Much of the work was oriented toward outlining in broad terms the general problems of cultural relationships, such as the definitions of large culture groups and the temporal relationships between them. Perhaps the best recent summary of the general archeology of this valley has been brought together by several authors in two books, publications of the American Philosophical Society and the Illinois State Museum.
