Indexed. 832 pp. ABOUT THE PUBLISHERS: "The Society of Socialist Christians is a body of people who, acknowledging the leadership of Jesus Christ, pledge themselves to work and to pray for the spiritual and economic emancipation of all people from the bondage of material things, and fort he establishment of the Commonwealth of God on Earth. Recognizing that the present capitalist order of society is fundamentally anti-Christian, the Society will strive for the creation of an international Socialist order based on the communal control of the means of life and cooperation in freedom for the common weal. The Society will work as part of the Labour Movement. It believes that the necessary transformation of our social order requires a change of heart and mid and will, and a corresponding change of political and industrial arrangement; substituting mutual service for exploitation, and a social democracy for the struggle of individuals and classes." Introductory pages bear previous owner's stamps. Leaves have evenly toned with only occasional foxing, predominantly within endpapers. Inner hinges are starting within volume 1924, yet boards are yet well attached. Bindings are sound. A fascinating, very readable set. Burgundy leather with 5 raised bands, gilt titles to spine and gilded borders to all leather edges. A rather sumptuous binding for the subject matter of the contents. c. 500 pages plus inserts bound in: 4 page ad for The Truth of Christianity by W.H. Turton and 4 page ad for Religion and the Rise of Capitalism by R.H. Tawney bound in twice. Small bookplate of Ewart Morse to front and rear pastedowns and his initials to the top margin of four pages. A considerable resource, with articles of considerable diversity on such topics as pacifism, capital punishment, trade unions, travel essays, letters to Archbishops and Bishops, and so forth.
