John Douglas Pringle's introduction could hardly be bettered in its succinctly dramatic account of the factors of land, race and history which brought about the birth of a national school -- 'we have seen', he remarks, 'taking place during our own lives and under our own eyes, something which has never been observed before and . . . may never happen again.'
