A very scarce work presenting the life and achievements of the Bank of England's chief cashier, Abraham Newland, written by John Dyer Collier. The first edition. Very scarce work.Written by successful journalist and reporter, John Dyer Collier. In this work, Collier presents the life of Abraham Newland, who held the prestigious position of principal cashier at the Bank of England between 1782 and 1807. A highly dedicated man, Newland slept at the Bank of England itself for 25 years, hardly ever visiting his own house in Highbury. Throughout his career, Newland's name grew in notoriety, with the expression "an Abraham Newland" meaning a bank note, due to the fact that without his signature, a Bank of England note was not negotiable. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Bound in half calf. Externally, sound, with rubbing to joints and backstrip. Joints are cracking, with surface cracks to backstrip. Hinges are strained, but holding reasonably firm. Endpapers and blanks renewed. Internally, firmly bound. Some offsetting and areas of spotting or handling marks to pages. Amateur repairs to a few pages, including the preface and frontispiece, not affecting text or image. Good. book.
