Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The early Dutch settlers in Albany called the hills to the west "Hellebergh," or "Clear Mountain." Little did they know of the rugged terrain that lay above the Helderberg Escarpment or of the hardy men and women who would one day tame that wilderness. Faced with thin soil and a harsh climate, the resourceful people of the Helderbergs established four towns: Berne, Knox, Rensselaerville, and Westerlo. The Hilltown farmers declared their independence from the feudal landlord system during the renowned anti-rent wars of the mid-1800s. As the agrarian economy faded, the enterprising Hilltowners used local resources in new ways to earn their livelihood. Landowners capitalized on the natural beauty of the region to attract tourists. Knox's cottage industry of wooden pillbox production brought it fame as the "Pillbox Capital of the World." Rensselaerville's Huyck Preserve created opportunities for the long-term study of biological systems. Helderberg Hilltowns takes the reader back to 1880 through 1950, a time of one-room schoolhouses, church socials, barn raisings, haying with draft horses, bobsledding parties, family reunions, and rocking chairs on the veranda. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Welcome to our small, family-owned bookstore. This Good to Acceptable Condition Vintage Book was copyrighted in 1948 by the publisher, Prentice-Hall, Inc. Written by John Elberfeld. No dust jacket. Ex-library Copy. Stamp markings on title page, the inside of the boards, and on the flyleaves. Library card pouch on the front fly leaf. Some library related pen markings on the back of the title page and the backstrip. The cover's boards are stiff and flat. The cover has soiling across its surfaces and some water stains. The corners of the boards and the crown and base of the backstrip have bumping that breaks the cloth. The backstrip also has a tear on the cloth, but the spine integrity is compromised. The lettering on the cover and the backstrip remains sharp and legible. The text block's edges and the inside of the boards have waterspotting. The first page of first chapter is wrinkled and taped, but the text and illustrations are not affected. The pages are free of rips and major ceases. The binding and text block are quite sound with no loose pages. No ISBN. Packaged using bubble wrap and a sturdy cardboard box. Tracking number provided for no extra cost. Thanks for checking out this book from our small town brick-and-mortar and supporting a small business.
