John Goad's scarce late seventeenth-century meteorological and astrological work on weather prediction and celestial bodies, previously owned by Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale. A fascinating and curious late seventeenth century meteorological and astrological work on weather prediction and celestial bodies, observed using experimental natural philosophy.Written by John Goad, an Oxford fellow and head-master of Merchant Taylors' School in London. This interesting work was based on the premise that each of the planets, using their unique and specific makeup and nature, greatly influenced the earth's atmosphere. Goad aimed to reform astrology using Baconian principles, while at the same time discarding earlier beliefs that he believed to be based on superstition. The first edition of this scarce work. With five pages of publisher's adverts to the rear.Including the bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale to the front pastedown. Hugh Cecil Lowther was the founding member and first acting president of the National Sporting Club, and co-edited the 'Lonsdale Library of Sports', an extensive sporting series published by Seeley, Service and Co. in the 1920s and 1930s.Signature: [2] a1-a2, B1-6N2ESTC Citation No. R30414 In full contemporary calf binding. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing to the joints, spine, and extremities. Some shelf wear to the boards. Including the bookplate of Hugh Cecil Lowther, 5th Earl of Lonsdale to the front pastedown. Light contemporary ink notations to the front free-endpaper and front blank. Internally, hinges are starting and cords are exposed. Remaining binding is generally firm. Some offsetting to the front free-endpaper, and a few spots to the pages, which are otherwise bright and clean, especially considering the age of the work. Very Good. book.
