He proposes his friend 'George Kent Esq of this city, a Counsellor at Law', for the appointment of 'Messenger to carry on the electoral votes to Washington'. He describes Kent as 'a man of talents, a brother of Ex-Gov Kent of Maine', who has 'been very active with his able pen in helping in this section of the country to promote the election of Gen Taylor'. Kent is a prolific writer and 'a decided Whig'. Sheppard concludes nostalgically, that he has presumed upon 'the long past & happy days of my and our earlier life, where the friendship of yourself, & of your honored connexionns were so dear to me'.…
