A collection of illustrations of steam-powered vessels that operated along the coastal US from the 1840's to the 1890's, drawn by Samuel Ward Stanton. Each sketch includes information about the vessel's career. Stanton (1870-1912) was an artist who specialized in the rendering of steamships and was known as the foremost authority in the country on the history of steam shipping. He died in the sinking of the Titanic. At the time of his death, he was preparing a history of American steamboats which, even in its unfinished condition, is the most comprehensive in existence.
