Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. John Jay Leighton. Robert Royalton and His Covered Wagon. Rochester NY: The Rochester Press, 1928, 1st edition, xiv, 334 pp. *** Sub-title - A True Story of an American Boy from Boyhood to Young Manhood. The veteran's son fought his own battles with the power of inspiration and courted the woman he loved in a locomotive cab. It would have been easier if Bob had run away to the circus, but then that would not be much of a story. A somewhat strange book by modern standards , sort of a Horatio Alger type character with strong religious underpinnings. Some of the adventures are a bit far fetched. Definitely an interesting period piece. With a frontis. illustration, eight (8) plate illustrations, two (2) full-page and three (3) text drawings, and two (2) photos. Art work was done by Raschen (?). The original color illustrated dust jacket (not price clipped) is in a clear protective cover. There is another illustration on the back panel. This book is in my inventory and the images are of this particular item. *** Dark red cloth boards with gilt lettering on front cover and on spine. Covers are clean with light shelf wear. Contents are clean and complete in a solid binding. Jacket has moderate soil overall, chipping at spine ends (no loss), corners, edges, and front flap fold. Flaps have creases on edges inside book. Book is VG+ in Fair jacket. *** 7.75 inches tall by 5.25 inches.

Hays managed Warren G. Hardings successful campaign for the Presidency of the U.S. and was subsequently appointed Postmaster General. After a year in that position, he resigned to become most famously known as the first President of Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which under his guidance published a blacklist of actors and workers studios should not hire, inserted moral clauses into actors' contracts, and published an informal list of suggested guidelines for film producers. When the Catholic Church formed its Legion of Decency and threatened nationwide boycotts of movies, Hays installed a more formal production code, called the Hays Code( later simply "The Code"), which became the virtual law of Hollywood until the 1960s. Near Fine, faint toning to endpages, in a Very Good Plus dustjacket, small chips at head of spine, 3/8" spot of discoloration to spine. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR.
