Marsh went to the California gold fields to make his fortune (and didn't), on to Oregon (various unsuccessful business ventures and back to Baltimore and his wife and two children. Added 2 more children and the lived a respected and productive life. In his letters to his wife, he gives wonderful descriptions of the gold fields and of the young territory of Oregon. Nice copy.
