Cloth. Condition: Poor. Meninsky, Bernard (illustrator). First Edition. (1st) Designed by Vincent Stuart, 29 heavy lightly browned pages, illustrations throughout, some full-page by Bernard Meninsky. Large but thin book, dark blue cloth badly faded at bottom one-third of front, torn the length of the long spine left edge from spine bottom left to near the top, faded at top back one-fourth. Poor--reading copy.

Condition: Acceptable. Allan Wingate 1947 Paperback. Diagonal slice to much of front cover. Tattering to jacket. Pen inscription to front fly leaf. Page widths are not uniform, resulting in light tearing to longer edges. Secure binding.

Colour plates and illustrations in the text. Boards faded on spine; lightly rubbed. Pages almost entirely clean. Gutter starting to crack in one place.

Bound in full blue cloth, gilt-blocked outline illustration to upper board, gilt title to backstrip, with printed and illustrated paper dustjacket preserved in an 'Adaptaroll' protector. A quite handsome and large-scale edition, rather surprisingly for the immediate post-war austerity years. Very Good (some fading to the cloth at the extremeties, internally very clean with no foxing or inscriptions, with the small bookplate of George Fleming to the front paste-down), the dustjacket Good (overall quite clean, but some loss to edges and corners, the illustration unaffected).
