Add to basketPaper. Condition: Good. First Edition. Three Original Typed Signed Letters and a Magazine in Relation to Writer John Moore and Artist Anthony Rossiter. The letter to Moore from Rossiter discusses his new book and how much help John Moore's work did for him during an illness in Greece just after WW2. A typed and signed reply from John Moore mentions his major works and was glad his books helped in his recovery. Also includes a letter from the John Moore society and a magazine from 2008 reprinting the original two letters for the society. From a large collection of the artists letters. Anthony Rossiter RWA MSIAD was a British landscape painter who was educated at Eton and studied painting at Chelsea Art School from 1947-51. He was a romantic visionary, a "poet" whose heaven was the Mendip Hills in Somerset. Gnarled hedgerows, tumbling stone walls, broken gates, reflections in water and ploughed fields were all his subject matter. His works also included portraits, most notably that of W.H.Auden. Anthony Rossiter began his correspondence with Huxley and Osmond while writing his autobiography, The Pendulum (Gollancz, 1966). From the ecstasy of the creative high to the agonising despair of depression, The Pendulum was the creative artist's riposte to the cult success of Doors of Perception (Chatto & Windus, 1954). Where Huxley induced heightened perception by carefully controlled experiments with mescaline, Rossiter's swings came naturally and without warning. John Cecil Moore 1907 - 1967 was a best-selling British writer and pioneer conservationist. He was described by Sir Compton Mackenzie as the most talented writer about the countryside of his generation. His best-selling trilogy, published in the years immediately after the Second World War - Portrait of Elmbury, Brensham Village and The Blue Field - was followed by a series of novels and self-styled 'country-contentments'. All in good condition with light creasing. Letters of various sizes. Ref18838. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. Autograph; 113 pages; Contents clean and secure in contemporary binding of quarter brown leather with tan linen covered boards, silk marker ribbon. Inscribed and Signed by the author "For H. W. Wenning / with best regards / Merrill Moore / Boston, August 1933" Frontispiece by "Gaston Werm" (Charles Bisssell). Henry W. Wenning (19111987) was a life long book collector and for many years a rare bookdealer operating in New Haven under the name Modern Rare Books. Wenning also published several books in the 1960s and 1970s, in conjunction with C. A. Stonehill. This was the first published work by Merrill Moore (1903-1957), an American poet and also a psychiatrist. Born and educated in Tennessee, Moore attended Vanderbilt and was a member of the Fugitives literary group. Moore mentored the young Robert Lowell, introducing him to Ford Madox Ford, Allen Tate and John Crowe Ransom, and who encouraged Lowell to become a student of Ransom after Lowell's departure from Harvard. Wenning also taught neurology at the Harvard Medical School. ; Signed by Author.
