Paperback. Condition: Very Good. Over the past ten years, researchers have had the opportunity, at the Feighner Research Institute, to work with paroxetine, fluoxetine and other selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. They maintain that these drugs represent a significant addition in psychiatry because of their relative lack o…f side-effects and broad range of potential clinical indications. Indeed, their widespread and increasing use in the United States and other countries underlines this importance. This book reflects the state of the art in terms of the clinical issues surrounding these medications. The first chapter of the book reviews the evidence that points to the effects of these drugs on serotonergic function and the central role of serotonin in many psychiatric disorders, while the following chapter reviews the pharmacology of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors. The remaining chapters contain reviews of clinical trials of the selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors in many of the conditions previously mentioned, concluding with a chapter on important clinical issues in the use of these agents. This book is aimed at all those who take care of depressed patients, but especially at residents and clinicians in psychiatry and general medicine. Clinicians are confronted daily with human suffering and require knowledge of what is both safe and effective for their patients. This is a different stance from that of the pure scientist, who accepts nothing as fact until replicated experimental evidence is available. Hence the purpose of this book is to review the available evidence from a clinical standpoint. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Condition: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Seiten: 628 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | This book is being published as we mark the end of the first 50 years of the modern antidepressant era. This era began with the chance discovery that tri- clic antidepressants and monoamine oxidase inhibitors had antidepressant p- per…ties. That discovery had three consequences. First, it brought simple and effective treatment to patients suffering from major depressive illnesses. Second, these discoveries, together with the discovery of lithium and chlorpromazine, began the remedicalization of psychiatry by making it clear that the treatment of many of the major psychiatric illnesses can be approached in the same way as other medical conditions. However, the most far-reaching effect was to provide the first clue as to what mechanisms might underlie antidepressant efficacy, a development that has led to an explosion in the number of available an- depressants and to their widespread use. The goal of this book is to provide a thorough review of the current status of antidepressants¿how we arrived at this point in their evolution and where we are going in both the near and the long term. The book employs both a scientific and historical approach to accomplish these goals. The book is intended for practitioners who use antidepressants on a daily basis in their practice as well as for the student and researcher. Each will find that the book provides a comprehensive and logical approach to this important group of medications. The importance of the book is a function of its topic.
