First Edition
Presumed first edition (OCLC does not cite an earlier edition). Paged as [b/w plate], [title/copyright], [b/w plate], [vii-ix], x-xiv, [9]-10, [b/w plate], 11-194. Hardcover: H 21.5cm x L15.5cm. No dust jacket. Green cloth with some staining and soiling; short slightly frayed tear at spine heel; light bumping to board corners with wear to rear board's top fore-edge corner. Edges toned; some foxing to early and late leaves a few spots of soiling and light foxing to interior leaves; page 13 in Chaplain Randolph's Introduction has slender 3.5cm slip of paper glued over beginning of line 2 evidently correcting an error in text. Binding is firm. A good+ copy of an uncommon regimental history. With Preface by author Elkanah Babcock, Introduction by Methodist Army Chaplain J.A. Randolph (1859-1928) four unpaged portrait plates, and b/w illustrations inset amongst text. Although unfortunately without any markings as such, this book is at least a Randolph family copy (with perhaps some possibility of it being Revered John A. Randolph's personal copy) as it was acquired from Columbus, Mississippi descendants of his brother Rev. Joseph Buyce Randolph, Jr., 1871-1928 along with many Methodist theological books that had ownership signatures of the elder sibling which indicates that the former's personal library somehow ended up with the latter. However it is unknown whether the aforementioned emendation in the Introduction is a personal correction or was standard throughout the printing for, upon checking most of the online catalogs of the nineteen institutions (per OCLC) actually holding physical copies, none make any mention of it.
