Condition issues include light rubbing to the top edge of the front cover, mild spine lean, small loss at the top of the spine, and a .375" closed tear at the middle fore edge of the back cover. Pages 9/10 (probably ads) are missing. Pages 109/110 are missing affecting the text of the Lord of the Air article (about eagles). Otherwise the interior is clean and tight. A fair to good copy of a vintage magazine. The condition rating is knocked down by the missing pages.

He converted to Roman Catholicism and developed a close friendship with Augustus Welby Pugin. Herbert's impressive portrait of Cardinal Wiseman (exh. RA, 1842; St Mary's College, Oscott) indicates the high Catholic circles in which he moved. Herbert advocated painting in the open air, a central tenet of Pre-Raphaelitism. In 1869 he moved with his family to his newly built London residence, The Chimes, West End Lane, in Kilburn, designed by Pugin's son Edward.

Three handwritten notes by these British figures.With the mounted and excised signature of English painter John Rogers Herbert, who was a notable precursor of Pre-Raphaelitism.With a signed letter from Richard Redgrave, dated 1864 and addressed only to 'Madam'. Redgrave, an English landscape artist, genre painter, and administrator, states that he has 'much pleasure in enclosing you the photograph you have asked for - and have signed it as you requested'. He signed the letter 'yours, very faithfully, Rich Redgrave'.The final letter, from Scottish portrait painter Sir Francis Grant, is simply dated 'July 8', and reads 'Sir Francis Grant presents his compliments to Miss Brook[sic] to thank her very much for the photographs which he thinks very -'. Grant served as President of the Royal Academy, and painted Queen Victoria, alongside other notable British figures. Three loose leaves. Herbert signature mounted, with minor light handling marks. ALS, headed Ramsgate, June 22, 1868, addressed 'My dear Sir' thanks adressee for the invitation which he cannot attend and discusses the painting of Rev. Dr. Logan which he is sending to the railway station Birmingham requesting 'not to allow any one to see it 'till it is up.' Approximately 210 words.
