Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. The author signed this volume, "Faithfully Yours," on the front free end paper to no specific individual. However, a previous owner's name is on the front paste down on the top left corner. All illustrations called for are present. There are a few pages with singular brown spots and several pages… with what appears to be a water line in the margins-the paper is not wavy on these pages. The majority of pages are clean and without blemishes. There is wear to the spine ends and tips. The gold lettering on the spine and front cover, the musical decoration on the front cover, and the gold top edge are all bright. The book remains square and solidly bound. Please look at the pictures provided carefully, and ask questions about this item prior to making a purchase, thank you. Signed by Author(s).

Contact seller5-star sellerThe Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of Maughamâs masterpiece and one of the most important novels of the 20th century. Octavo, two volumes, bound in full modern morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands, gilt numbers to the spine, all edges gilt, gilt turn-ins and… inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, frontispiece, with sixteen black and white illustrations. Boldly signed by illustrator John Sloan on the colophon page to the rear of volume two. One of 1,500 numbered copies, this is number 222. In fine condition. Introduction by Theodore Dreiser. Illustrated by John Sloan. âMaughamâs longest and most ambitious novel, in which âfact and fiction are inextricably mixed,â draws heavily upon the authorâs own youth, with circumstances and names scarcely alteredâ (Parker, 63). âAs early as 1911 [Maugham] had retired temporarily from the theatre to work on his long novel, Of Human Bondage. He was to correct the proofs under the admiring eyes of Desmond MacCarthy in a small hotel at Malo, near Dunkirk; the two men were drivers in an ambulance unit for which they had volunteered at the outbreak of war in 1914⦠Of Human Bondage was published in 1915. It was less noticed in wartime London than in New York, where Theodore Dreiser reviewed it with enthusiasm. It remains Maughamâs most impressive literary work, and by the time of his death [1965] was said to have sold ten million copiesâ (DNB). It was the basis for the 1934 film directed by John Cromwell starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis.
