Pen and ink drawing forming the front and rear cover design for Goodall's book The Adventures of Paddy Pork (1968), depicting the eponymous Paddy skipping down a country lane to a fairground (right-hand side/front cover) and a village scene with other anthropomorphised animal inhabitants (left-hand side/rear cover). To the left is a blank space for the book's titles to be placed; here the faint traces of titles in pencil can be seen but have been subsequently rubbed-out by the artist. The image measuring 38 x 14.5cm. Signed by the artist in ink to the lower left ("John S. Goodall"). There are a few discreet pinholes to the margins, otherwise condition is excellent - the image remaining clean and bright. A splendid, typically playful pen and ink drawing by the artist, illustrator and author John Strickland Goodall (1908-1996) forming the original cover design for his most famous work, The Adventures of Paddy Pork (1968). A charming wordless children's picture book, the story follows the misadventures of Paddy Pork after he slips away from his mother to join the circus, only to find out that he was better off at home. The work won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award in 1969 and marked the beginning of one of the most successful chapters of Goodall's artistic career, with the author-artist subsequently producing several other picture books in the same style which were published around the world, winning him numerous accolades and resulting in him becoming one of the publisher Macmillan's best-selling authors.

Manuscript / Paper Collectible First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. The original manuscript maquette of Goodall's wordless picture book, Creepy Castle, which would be published in 1975 by Macmillan in London and Atheneum in New York. 2 pen and watercolour manuscripts, 1 oblong octavo (190 x 140 mm) and 1 square octavo (135 x 126 mm). Volume I: loose gatherings with illustrated wrappers, 15 double page drawings (368 x 134 mm), of which all but one feature a flap which changes the scene, and 2 single page drawings (182 x 134 mm). Volume II: bound with illustrated self-wrappers, 4 double page drawings (253 x 134 mm), one of which features 3 flaps that change the scene. Together with a copy of the US first edition of the completed book in the original pink boards and pictorial dust jacket. Extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, a few small nicks and light creases to wrappers of Volume I. An excellent set with bright and crisp watercolour drawings. While the published book conveys Goodall (1908 - 1996)'s inventive approach to the picture book format, it fails to fully transmit the delicate lines and colouring of the artist's lively illustrations, as evident in the current manuscript. Signed by Author(s).
