Trade Paperback. Condition: New. California Locos brings together over 40 years of LA culture , presented through the eyes and hands of the artists who shaped it. Featuring three generations of legendary LA artists , this book chronicles the life and work of the five original locos and expands this core membership to include works by Mister Cartoon, Shepard Fairey, Estevan Oriol, Retna, Slick and Robert Williams. Surf and skate culture, street art, tattoo, street photography, graphic design and music come together on over 160 pages to celebrate Los Angeles in all its exuberant diversity and raw grittiness. This book embodies the creative breeding ground provided by the City of Angles, chronicling its' influence on each artist all of which are major influencers of West Coast and worldwide popular culture in their own right. From the godfather of cholo graffiti, the brain behind the iconic street image 'Senor Suerte,' Charles Bojorquez, over artists David Tourje, Gary Wong and Norton Wisdom to the designer who gave a face to the 60s hippy movement, John van Hamersveld, this book provides the compelling background story. 40 pages of archive material give exclusive insights into the Southern Californian style rebellion. At the same time, California Locos takes this legacy into the present. From Shephard Fairey's influential Obama campaign posters, over Mr Cartoon's tattoos inspired by LA street life to Estevan Oriol's photographs of LA gangs and celebrities and Retna's highly instagrammable graffiti paintings, the next generation proves again and again that Los Angeles influence is a force to be reckoned with. Further context is added by contributions from renown writers such as the art critics Peter Frank and Shana Nys Drambot of LA Weekly and Huffington Post. After the success of Estevan Oriol's LA photography volumes, Drago is at it again with another book chronicling the Golden State's unique mix of high and low culture.…

As new in an as new dust jacket. A remarkable career retrospective of the artist whose two most famous posters are the great graphic poster for the film The Endless Summer, and the striking poster of Jimi Hendrix with curly snake-like hair. As the dust jacket notes: John Van Hamerveld (born 1941) is an American graphic artist and illustrator. In the early 1960s, while attending Art Center College of Design by day, he began his professional career as art director of Surfer magazine. By the mid-1960s, Van Hamersveld ground-breaking poster for the surf film The Endless Summer was making the rounds , and a name for its creator in the process. Eventually his tallents were directed towards concert posters promoting shows by the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, The Who and more. By the late 60s, John was hired as an art director at Capitol Records where he went on to design 300 album covers such as: Magical Mystery Tour - the Beatles, Crown of Creation - Jefferson Airplane, Exile On Main St. - Rolling Stones, Fly Like An Eagle - Steve Miller Band, Hotter Than Hell - Kiss, Skeletons from the Closet - The Greatful Dead, East To the Beat - Blondie, This Is What You Want - Public Image Ltd.…

Contact seller5-star sellerA rare example of original album cover art by one of the legends of the medium. John Van Hamersveld (b. Baltimore, 1941) designed the iconic poster for the surf film Endless Summer while still in art school. As a professional graphic designer he did the album covers for The Beatles' Magical Mystery Tour, the Rolling Stones' Exile on Main St, plus LPs by Big Brother and the Holding Company, Jefferson Airplane, Bob Dylan, Blondie, and even Charles Bukowski (Reads His Poetry, 1980). This is an original painting on acetate for the cover of Beans self-titled debut (and only) album for Avalanche Records, a nascent label under United Artists Records. The Day-Glo design is based on Van Hamersveld's character Johnny Face, which appeared on popular headshop posters beginning in 1970. As far as your cataloger can tell, very little of Van Hamersveld's original album cover art is in private hands, making this a rare opportunity to acquire an original piece?one featuring his most identifiable character?from one of the masters of the genre. This original art has three connected pieces: foam core (21-1/2 by 23 inches) on which is mounted a piece of matboard (15 by 20 inches) with an acetate overlay (14 by 17 inches). The painting is on the back of the acetate, a difficult technique requiring the image to be painted in reverse with one color overlaying another so the artist can't actually see what they are doing. Van Hamersveld signed the image on the matboard, below the image but under the acetate so while it appears there is tape on the signature, the tape is actually affixed to the acetate above. Van Hamerveld titled the piece at the top (Beans!) and noted the record company (U[nited]. A[rtists]. Records) below. It appears he later gave this piece to a well-known celebrity photographer whose name is inscribed at the bottom of the mat. The album Beans got good reviews but within months of its release in January 1972 one band member died in a car accident and two others got hepatitis from dirty needles. The group never recovered. In original condition. A very striking piece.…
