Written originally in French in 1892, Wilde's one-act tragedy Salomé was translated into English by Lord Alfred Douglas, inspired some of Aubrey Beardsley's finest illustrations (long available in a Dover edition), and served as the text (in abridged form) for Strauss' renowned opera of the same name. Conceptions by John Vassos (illustrator). This book has no dust jacket, but it has wonderful B&W illustrations by John Vassos. The binding is faded orange/brown cloth. It has noticeable shelf wear. Interestingly, the previous owner has written her name inside the front. The name: Margaret Doggett, dated December 1939. Miss Doggett, who notably survived a ship sinking in the Atlantic while in a sorority at the University of Texas, later married Trammel Crow, the noted Dallas developer. Photos available on request.
