This issue features first the "First in the Series of Startling Life Insurance Exposures", Henry Shedd Beardsley's expose of the life insurance industry, "The Despotism of Combined Millions: How the giant life insurance "combine" employs vast trust funds of policy holders in Wall Street's ruthless speculative schemes"; the second major feature of this issue is Lauriston Ward's "The Naturalization Industry", an expose on the fraudulent sale of naturalization certificates. Other items of interest include: an examination of the famous 1841 murder of Mary Rogers that includes interviews and photos of surviving witnesses; short fiction; "The Foremost Fun-Makers of the Stage" with portraits of nine comedians of the day; "Little Human Stories"; many, many advertisements. Perfect-bound in paper wraps; pp. 1-8 [ads], [400]-506, 9-36 [ads]; 24.8cm x 17.5cm. This copy a presentation copy, for one of the city council members, B.B. Stakemiller, with his name in gilt on front. SIGNED by the architect, Hugh R. Davies on the illustration of the Entrance Dome. Additional eight SIGNATURES throughout of various council members and committee executives, each on their photographs. Stamped number "96" perhaps indicating a limited edition. Typed program for Exposition Dinner Meeting, laid-in. Embossed flexible leather-like boards with gilt highlighting, which has mostly rubbed off. Some toning to paper edges, rusty edges on endpapers with a square of offsetting from newspaper clipping on front endpaper. Also large pencil "Lent by"ownership signature on front endpaper. Otherwise very nice, solid copy.
