This volume contains some of the gems of literature which the race has learned to love. Some of the 'old fashioned selections' and some of the most charming new short classics, are offered as a basis for study and appreciation. The average pupil will study his reading lesson with zest if he is given some definite work to do. In these studies, the brief introduction to each selection is intended to whet the pupil's appetite. The exercises following each study make his study definite and to the point. Helpful notes are added wherever necessary, and additional readings are given. ; Selections include: The American Boy -- The Light That Is Felt -- The Tiger The Brahman, And The Jackal -- A Kind Word -- Little Brown Hands -- The Lame Man And The Blind Man -- The Owl And The Pussy-cat -- September -- The Arab And His Camel -- The Shepherd Boy And The Wolf -- Needless Pain -- Because He Loves Us -- Marjorie's Almanac -- The Brown Thrush -- Truth -- God Bless Our Flag -- The Quails -- The Discontented Stonecutter -- The Cloud -- All Things Beautiful -- Labor -- The Matsuyama Mirror -- Work While You Work -- The Pen -- The Quest -- God Bless The Commonplace -- A Bright Chinese Boy -- The Grapevine Swing -- Beautiful Joe -- Forget-me-not -- October's Bright Blue Weather -- Daisies -- So Much Of Goodness -- The Breaking In Of Black Beauty -- The Children's Hour -- The Magic Mill -- The Corn Song -- Daniel Webster's First Case -- The Day Is Done -- The Image And The Treasure -- Somebody's Mother -- Look For Goodness -- The Code Barbarian -- The Discontented Pendulum -- True Success -- Which Loved Best? -- Hope -- The Story Of King Midas -- T Is The Last Rose Of Summer -- Home, Sweet Home -- The Fight -- A Simple Recipe -- The Angels Song -- A Visit From St, Nicholas -- Ring Out, Wild Bells! -- Beauty In Common Things -- Letters Of Recommendation -- A Song For Flag Day -- The Stone In The Road -- Answer To A Child's Question -- Paul Revere's Ride -- The Dream Of Home -- The Choice Of Hercules -- Thomas Jefferson's Ten Rules -- After The Shipwreck -- The Lost Camel -- The Planting Of The Apple Tree -- We Should Smile -- The Humbug -- Sky-born Music -- The Pebble And The Acorn -- The Tree -- Service -- The Sleeping Beauty -- A Wholesome Tongue -- The Village Blacksmith -- Genuine Heroism -- The Legend Of Indian Corn -- Robert E. This reader, published after World War I, begins with a poem, "The American Boy." It is a dialogue between a father and son about patriotism. According to the author of this reader, the influence of the story "The Poor Little Match Girl" "founded many an orphan home and organized hundreds of societies for relief of the worthy poor," which indicates an emphasis on philanthropy and social work during the era of the Social Gospel.80% of selections taught traditional values."-- Sharon Vincz Andrews ; signature of a youthful Gerald Grout, later a Kansas Ophthalmologist ; GOOD. One folding letterpress table (some sections of text a bit browned and spotted, a few pages with repaired marginal tears). Engraved frontispiece portrait (margins strengthened on verso at an early date) 53 double-page or folding engraved maps and 4 full-page maps by John Cary, 9 double-page or folding and 88 full-page plates of artifacts, views and military plans, engraved and woodcut vignettes in the text ("An Accurate Map of England and Wales" laid down, "Middlesex" and the "East Riding of Yorkshire" strengthened on verso along the bottom edge, "Shropshire" with early closed tear affecting the image). Modern half brown cloth, marbled paper boards gilt (rebacked). Provenance: early marginal corrections in volumes one and III; pencilled drawings dated 1814 on page 499 and 511 of volume III; with the modern book plate of Warrington Museum on the front paste-down of each volume. First edition of Gough's translation with large-scale maps by John Cary. First published in Latin in 1586, the first edition in English in 1610. "If Camden was not the first English historian (in the modern sense of the word), topographer and antiquarian, he was certainly the first to relate the three studies, and his "Britannia", primarily topographical, is the first book which shows. the need to evaluate sources" ("Printing and the Mind of Man" 10). Camden's was the first survey of Great Britain county by county and the first study of Roman Britain as perceived in the landscape of 16th-century Britain. For this new edition Gough completely translated Camden's entire text, " a task that took him seven years. The actual printing took a further nine. He was criticized by some for the method which he employed in retaining the original text entire and relegating all his own and Gibson's additions to cumbersome footnotes at the bottom, and also for the accuracy of some of his translations and additions. He professed himself disappointed by the level of public interest. It was on the whole, however, agreed to be a work of immense value and the product of enormous labour. He had planned the enterprise since 1773 and collected new material assiduously from that date. As well as visiting every county himself, he called upon a network of antiquarian friends and correspondents to seek out information, check proofs, and offer suggestions" (R.H. Sweet for DNB). Gough's work is illustrated throughout for the first time with large-scale maps by the celebrated cartographer John Cary: "Cary's first known engraved plan is dated 1779. Henceforth, the quality of his engraving established new standards and a new style, with his effective, starkly beautiful, plain design being widely adopted. His firm's cartographic output was prolific and diverse, ranging through maps, plans, atlases, astronomical and educational works, road-books (including works based on surveys by Aaron Arrowsmith the elder, who probably trained him), guides, and globes. Particularly noteworthy are the immensely popular New and Correct English Atlas (editions from 1787), which became the standard county atlas of the period, and the Traveller's Companion (from 1790), the printing plates of both of which had to be replaced having become worn in the effort to meet the huge demand, and the particularly fine New English Atlas (from 1801) and New Universal Atlas (from 1808)" (David Smith for DNB).…

The celebrated Cary family business of scientific instrument and globe makers was established by John Cary (1755-1835) at Johnson's Court, Fleet Street, London, in 178,2 moving to a new address at 'Corner of Arundel Square', Strand, the following year. He was primarily an engraver of maps, charts, and globes who moved again in 1783 to 188 Strand. By 1791, he had entered into what appeared to be a relatively casual partnership with his brother William Cary (1759-1825). This partnership lasted until circa 1816, by which time William and John Cary had moved again to 181 Strand before finally settling in 86 St. James in 1820. The following year, he was succeeded by his sons, John (II) and George Cary, who continued from the firm's 181 Strand address until 1851/2 when the business was sold to Henry Gould. This terrestrial globe is most often seen presented as a pocket globe within a ray-skin-covered folding two-part case with celestial representations pasted to the inside surfaces.…
