About the book >.>.> A drawing for the kneeling figure is in the Castello Sforzesco, Milan, and a full sketch in the Galleria dell'Accademia, Venice. Pompeo Batoni was born in Lucca, the son of a distinguished local goldsmith. At an early age his passion for drawing and copying the Old Masters while working in his father's goldsmith shop, led him to be one of the most competent draughtsmen of his day. He moved to Rome in 1727 where he made copies after the antique, acquiring an extraordinary grasp of the problems of conveying three-dimensional form on to a two-dimensional surface. His early works tend to be private devotional pictures; whilst his phenomenal success in the 1750s as a portrait painter was largely due to the patronage of British and Irish gentry on the "Grand Tour". He painted the portraits of no less than twenty-two sovereigns. He died in Rome in 1787. (LL).
