The author also sets the scene by explaining the decrease in the farming population at the time and the move away from the trades in rural homes. Thematic depth is achieved by exploring the ways in which these unique schools helped to bring additional educational opportunities to rural children, provided extra support for farmers, and created a new kind of educational institutionâ"one which combined agricultural trade school principles with local community support.
