The front cover has a gilt image of Kriss Kringle holding toys beside a Christmas Tree. The binding is rubbed and worn but sound. The cloth is fraying and has brief tears at the spine ends. Corners bumpe…d. A sound copy with secure inner hinges. The text is damped along the bottom margin. Early owner's inscription on the front pastedown reads "C. G. Parker / 18 Garden St. Old Cambridge". Two signatures on the front flyleaf; one is C. T. Parker, and the same signature is on the third flyleaf. There are two stray pencil marks on the "Advertisement" page after the title page. A pencil notation on the title page reads, "Illus with 55 woodcuts". There are 13 full page illustrations and numerous other text engravings. No author given, but Worldcat notes various authors and engravings, including Henry W. Longfellow. His poem, "The Village Blacksmith" (first published in 1840) appears on pages 57-58 and is unattributed. A collection of prose and poetry for children. Not every item in the text pertains to Christmas, although several poems and bits of prose do relate to Christmas.

Past owner's ink note on front and r…ear pastedowns regarding book's purchase in January 1854 at an Aberdeen (probably Monroe County, Mississippi) auction; front free endpaper and front flyleaf creased; ink signature (appearing to be older than pastedown inscriptions) on ffep; pencil inscription dated 1859 at top of title page; bottom half of rear free endpaper removed with top half marred by pencil calculations and an antiquarian ink signature; foxing/toning to leaves with mild moisture stains and occasional pencil marks amongst text; several creased corners; pastedown writer's ink signature at top of page 67 too. Binding is firm. Uncommon Carlisle, Pennsylvania imprint by printer Archibald Loudon who was active from 1804-1818 and enjoyed other related commercial pursuits as a newspaper publisher ("The Cumberland Register" from 1805-1813), bookseller, paper manufacturer, binder, author, and local postmaster.

The playlet is an amusing representation of a single night at the 1946-194…9 high point of excitement over the discovery of the Malahide Papers ('During three years the incidents described here were repeated several times a week.'), and features among others Isham himself, his cleaner 'Mrs. Neville', 'Betty Houghton' and a priggish 'Publisher'. It is set at Isham's residence, in the ''Living room of apartment 3 A, 116 East 53rd Street'. It is preceded by a two-page introduction by 'MARY HYDE | Four Oaks Farm | For the New Year | 1972'. Scarce: no copies at the British Library or Bodleian, and the only copies on COPAC at Cambridge and Manchester. Image onn application.
