Hard Back. Condition: Near Fine. Slip Case. First Editions. All three books are 2008 Editions First Printings and all three have the previous owner's name stamped with red ink on the half-title pages and again on the back endpapers but beyond that those three books as new. The slipcase has a couple of very light, barely noticeable, corner bumps. Diane Johnson's Introduction includes all three books and it is included in the Gleanings in France book. In this inaugural edition of the Atlas Pocket Classics series, Diane Johnson introduces three masterpieces of travel writing. Robert Louis Stevenson's Travels with a Donkey (201 Pages 1879) ,is the notebook he kept during his respite from poor health, tormented love, and inadequate friends a thoroughly entertaining account of the French people and their country. James Fenimore Cooper's Gleanings in France (361 pages 1831), one of his rarest works, is an elegant collection of his letters home; he offers a discriminating portrait of France in the last days of its final experiment with monarchy, and offers practical advice on the art of travel. Edith Wharton proclaims in the opening lines of A Motor-flight through France (216 pages 1908), that the motor-car has restored the romance of travel then sets off in the new invention to explore the cities and countryside of the nation she loved above all; Wharton's spirited account of her journey is a declaration of her passion for travel and her deep affinity for the people and places of France.…

Add to basketHardcover. Condition: Good. Here is "Battles and Leaders of the Civil War - Volume 1 : From Sumter to Shiloh" . This is the Castle reprint edition, published circa 1970, with an Introduction by Roy F. Nichols. It includes the complete text and all of the illustrations that were used in the original edition, which was published some time in the 1880s. On the title page is the following : |> Being for the most part contributions by Union and Confederate Officers. Based upon "The Century War Series", edited by Robert Underwood Johnson and Clarence Clough Buel, of the editorial staff of "The Century Magazine". [The dust-jacket blurb enlarges on this by saying ] : The reader is given an incomparable view of the initial events of the war in exciting, authoritative articles written by such eminent military leaders as Ulysses S. Grant, Lew Wallace, G. T. Beauregard, Abner Doubleday, John C. Frémont, Don Carlos Buell, And A. E. Burnside, among others. |> And, of course, as an essential complement to these eyewitness accounts, there are over four hundred reproductions of illustrations, including steel engravings, maps, rare photographs, portraits, prints , and on-the-spot battle sketches, which bring once more to life all the storm and stress of combat. Of immense importance as a primary source in American history, "From Sumter to Shiloh" is a magnificent 'curtain raiser' to the greatest work dealing with the Civil War. It is a thrilling and inspiring book, an unsurpassed record of two vast armies - each composed of Americans - pitted against each other in a desperate, unrelenting struggle.<| SERIES : Battles and Leaders of the Civil War (Volume 1) TITLE : From Sumter to Shiloh EDITORS : Robert Underwood Johnson (1853 - 1937) and Clarence Clough Buel (1850 - 1933) INTRODUCTION : Roy F.
